Company History
The company was founded in 1844, quickly growing beyond its Massachusetts roots. By 1852, our policies were sold in California during the gold rush. We pioneered cash surrender values and wrote insurance for the new automobile industry. By the 1950's, we were a leader in group insurance and an early investor in Ray Krock and his innovative fast food chain. In the second half of the century, we introduced creative features like the 10-day free look and the non-smoker discount. Today, we are a publicly owned, Fortune 500 corporation, one of the 30 largest writers of property & casualty insurance.
